British weather is gloriously unpredictable. Sunshine one minute, sideways rain the next. For EV drivers, that means being ready for changing conditions that can affect range, charging speed, grip and comfort. With a few smart habits, you’ll stay safe, efficient and relaxed—whatever the skies are doing.
Before you set off
- Check weather warnings: Review the Met Office warnings for your route.
- Refresh the rules: See the Highway Code on adverse weather.
- Plan flexible stops: Short, strategic top-ups (around 20–80%) keep momentum and buffers healthy.
Rain
Charging is safe in rain. Public chargers are weatherproof. Do expect a small range dip from wipers, lights and demisters drawing energy. Drive with a lighter right foot, leave bigger gaps, and use low-beam headlights in heavy rain. Slow down to match conditions.
Ice
Defrost fully for clear visibility (it uses energy, so plan an earlier stop if needed). On low-grip surfaces regenerative braking may be limited, so don’t rely on it for slowing—brake gently and early. Keep speed down and spacing up.
Fog
Reduce speed, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights—not high beam (it reflects off fog). Stay smooth on inputs and be ready for sudden hazards.
Cold temperatures
- Charging can be slower: Batteries charge best when warm. Use preconditioning (if available) before a rapid stop.
- Comfort costs energy: Heating the cabin draws power—plan earlier, shorter top-ups.
- Tyre pressures: Cold reduces pressure; set to manufacturer spec for safety and efficiency.
Extreme heat
- Managed charging speeds: Thermal systems may slow charging to protect the battery.
- Air-con affects range: Stay cool, but expect a modest efficiency hit.
- Protect the car: Park/charge in shade where possible; consider a sunshade when parked.
Smart habits all year
- Precondition when you can: Battery and cabin prep improve comfort and charging efficiency.
- Drive smoothly: Progressive acceleration and braking conserve energy in all conditions.
- Keep a buffer: Weather can change quickly—arrive with margin in hand.
Whatever the weather, a little planning goes a long way. Check forecasts, keep things smooth and sensible, and let your EV’s tech do the heavy lifting. Year-round confidence, unlocked.
