In front of a passionate crowd in Boston, Scotland showed determination, organisation and resilience to secure all three points in their opening Group C fixture.
The game was competitive from the opening whistle, with both sides looking to settle their nerves on football’s biggest stage. Scotland gradually began to take control, creating the better opportunities and applying increasing pressure on the Haitian defence.
Scott McTominay came close early on, heading over before striking the post as Steve Clarke’s side started to assert themselves.
The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute.
Che Adams expertly controlled a long pass before finding Ben Doak, whose dangerous delivery into the area eventually fell to John McGinn on the edge of the box. The Scotland midfielder reacted quickest and fired home through a deflection to send the Scottish supporters into celebration.
That goal would ultimately prove decisive.
Haiti continued to battle throughout the match and created several opportunities of their own. Ruben Providence threatened on multiple occasions and Frantdzy Pierrot came agonisingly close to an equaliser late on, but Scotland stood firm to secure a memorable victory.
The result carries added significance because it represents Scotland’s first victory in a World Cup opening match since defeating New Zealand 5-2 at the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
John McGinn Delivers Again
Big moments require big players and John McGinn once again stepped forward when Scotland needed him most.
The Aston Villa midfielder was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match following an energetic and influential performance in midfield.
His goal may have arrived via a slight deflection, but his movement, anticipation and willingness to take responsibility reflected exactly why he remains one of Scotland’s most important players.
